BGMI Ban in India: Here’s Everything You Need to Know

Popular Battle Royale Game BGMI Banned in India

BGMI Ban in India

The Indian government has banned the popular battle royale game Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) from South Korean game developer Krafton. Both Apple and Google’s app stores in India have removed the application. The BGMI app is no longer available on the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, although the government has not made any announcement regarding its removal. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) have not issued an official statement concerning the ban on the BGMI app.

Why BGMI was Banned By the Indian Government?

The government has banned the royal battle-ground game, according to a source cited by Reuters, using a provision of the IT law that it invoked in 2020 to ban Chinese apps on national security and data sharing concerns, it has prohibited the BGMI under section 69A of India’s IT Act, which restricts public access to information in the interest of national security as well as a variety of other reasons.

The Indian government, under a similar provision of IT legislation, banned more than 100 Chinese applications since 2020, including the Chinese game developer Tencent Games’ PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG).

Google’s Reply on BGMI Removal From Play Store

After the government’s demands, Google announced that the app had been removed from India’s Play Store. “On receipt of the order, following the established process, we have notified the affected developer and have blocked access to the app that remained available on the Play Store in India,” Google stated.

Krafton Clarifying the Ban With Government

Krafton, on the other hand, said it is communicating with the authorities in order to clarify the restriction. “We are clarifying how BGMI was removed from Google Play store and the App store and will let you know once we get specific information,” reads Kraton’s remark.

BGMI / PUBG History and Story

In September 2020, the government of India banned popular online game PUBG for its affiliation with Chinese gaming firm Tencent Games. The government also banned 100-plus other applications that same month. PUBG was prohibited because it had connections to Chinese media company Tencent Games. These programs were accused of endangering national sovereignty and integrity as well as posing a genuine danger to Security of the State and Indian National Defense. The government warned that these applications may conduct espionage and surveillance operations with the aid of a microphone/camera, as well as access fine location (GPS) and engage in similar harmful network activity to previous blocked apps.

Krafton was devastated by the ban on PUBG, which was one of the game maker’s biggest markets. In India, numerous PUBG competitions were held. Following the PUBG ban, Krafton severed ties with Tencent Games. The firm announced that Tencent Games will no longer be permitted to distribute the PUBG MOBILE franchise in India. BGMI (Battle Grounds for India) was introduced by Krafton in June 2021 with the slogan “India Ka Battle Grounds.” ( India’s Battle Grounds). The game has already surpassed 100 million downloads on Google Play Store in India this month.

Can You Still Play BGMI in India?

Yes, the game has been removed from the app store listing only. Although the game’s server is still active at the moment, players who have downloaded it to their smartphone may play it whenever they want.

That, however, raises a lot of additional questions. When PUBG Mobile or Garena Free Fire were banned in Singapore, the games’ server went down, leaving people unable to play the game even if they have it installed on their smartphone.

Can You Still Download BGMI After the Ban?

The Google Play Store and Apple App Store have both removed BGMI from their listings. This means you can’t download the game from either app store. The game’s developer, Krafton, began distributing APK files through BGMI 2.0 update. As a result, Android users still have the ability to download the APK file and install the game on their device using the APK file.
