The game’s developer, Nintendo, discussed the Mario Kart 8 popularity

Despite being a modified version of the excellent Wii U game Mario Kart 8, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has proven to be an enormous blockbuster in the racing game genre, becoming the top-selling Nintendo Switch title to date. Kosuke Yabuki, the game’s producer, sat down with Nikkei to talk about why he thinks the game and the franchise are so beloved. Do you think that this game will be a timeless classic, selling more than 40 million copies?

We didn’t, but Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was ideal for the Switch in retrospect. You may play the system anywhere and even split the controller into two pieces, making it simple to pick up and play with a nearby sibling or friend. That appeal has not diminished in five years since the game’s release.

“It’s both an accessible and deep game. There are people who only play the game on Christmas or New Year’s, while others work to improve their skills every day. We’re always mindful of balancing the experience for both types of players,” Yabuki added.

A new set of courses will be added to the game in 2020, as the Booster Course Pass will add 48 new races to the game over the next 20 years, bringing the total track count to 96.

What is your opinion on the Mario Kart franchise’s popularity?

In Mario Kart, you throw seashells at your competitors during the race and attempt to make them slip on banana peels, which is a little unusual. Mario Kart’s charm is founded on these uncommon techniques.

Players should be able to feel emotions other than the game’s outcome. We deliberately constructed the game in such a manner that extraordinary events like slipping a banana before the finish line happened one after another.
