YouTube Vanced, one of the most popular modded apps in the community, is permanently shutting down. This smart hack was featured on the front page of Reddit and got a lot of attention. It allowed users to watch YouTube videos without being bombarded with advertising, while also including functionality such as background playback and more for free.

The creators of Vanced received a cease and desist letter from Google previously, forcing them to stop offering and developing the service. “We were asked to remove all references to ‘YouTube,’” says a Vanced team admin in a Discord chat with The Verge, “change the logo, and remove all links related to YouTube goods.”

On Sunday, the app’s developers announced its demise on the project’s official Telegram group and Vanced Twitter account. While it’s unlikely that the application will be deactivated for all users, especially once they’ve installed it on their devices, there is a risk that future upgrades might be suspended.

The majority of the YouTube Premium features are now available to users for free, allowing them to watch videos without advertisements and add their own dislike countback. Users may also utilize the picture in picture mode to play the song in the background.

Youtube Vanced recently changed its name to Vanced and removed most references to YouTube from its website, presumably in an attempt to avoid legal conflict with Google.

Google has been cracking down on unlicensed clients, such as Groovy and Rythm, two popular Discord bots for music listening on a server. For a time, however, these applications were accessible. Then YouTube sent cease and desist letters to the developers, and they too were immediately taken down.
