Epic has raised $2 billion for its kid-friendly metaverse projects

Epic Games, the maker of Fortnite, has raised $2 billion in a funding round led by Sony and KIRKBI.

Epic Games announced today that it has raised $2 billion in funding from Sony and KIRKBI –the parent company of the Lego Group. Both firms invested $1 billion each, which gives Epic Games a money equity valuation of $31.5 billion.

Today’s news follows shortly after Epic said it was teaming up with Lego to create a metaverse for youngsters. Epic claims that the fresh money will be used to develop its kid-friendly metaverse and expansion efforts, as well as support its current development.

Epic announced that all three firms intend to develop new social entertainment that explores the connection between digital and physical realms with this funding. “As we reimagine the future of entertainment and play we need partners who share our vision. We have found this in our partnership with Sony and KIRKBI,” Tim Sweeney, Epic Games CEO and Founder, made the announcement.

“This investment will accelerate our work to build the metaverse and create spaces where players can have fun with friends, brands can build creative and immersive experiences and creators can build a community and thrive.”

Fortnite-Maker Epic Games and Lego haven’t revealed many details about their envisioned metaverse, but they did submit three principles to ensure that the digital spaces they create are secure. The two will collaborate to make the safety and well-being of children a top priority, protect children’s privacy, and provide kids and adults with tools that enable them to manage their online experiences.
