Next Tomb Raider Game unveiled with Unreal Engine 5 Announcement
Crystal Dynamics hasn’t yet released a teaser or trailer for its next Tomb Raider game yet, But the next instalment in the series will be powered by Unreal Engine 5, rather than Crystal’s proprietary engine, as announced today along with the release of Unreal Engine 5.
“Crystal Dynamics is thrilled to be a part of the Unreal Engine 5 launch,” Dallas Dickinson, Crystal Dynamics’ general manager, stated. “This new engine may enable more compelling storytelling and gaming experiences. That is why we’re pleased to announce that we’ve just started work on the next Tomb Raider game, which will be powered by Unreal Engine 5.
“Our goal is to push the limits of fidelity and deliver a high-quality cinematic action-adventure experience that fans of the Crystal Dynamics and Tomb Raider franchises deserve.”
The last time we heard, the game would have a single timeline in the earlier phases of creation. The story of Lara’s early days as she is cast as a survivor, hero, and ultimately a tomb raider is told in the Origins trilogy, while the original game focuses on an experienced and capable adventurer.
The game’s producers, according to game director Will Kerslake, envision the next game as a “continuation” of an “established adventure” that began with Core Design’s first entry and continues through Crystal Dynamics’ most recent release.
The studio is also developing a new Tomb Raider for the eighth generation of consoles. In addition to the next Tomb Raider, it is working on an Xbox exclusive called Perfect Dark with The Initiative from Xbox.
Naturally, Crystal Dynamics is continuing to expand its online service game, Marvel’s Avengers, which just received a patch that adds a redesigned battle table that aims to streamline processes and enhance the overall user experience.
