We hope from the start of the year until October 31, you listened to your best songs. Because you’d be correct if you thought Spotify collects your listening data only till Halloween for its end-of-year Wrapped 2022 feature.

What is Spotify Wrapped and why it’s anticipated/feared by fans?

If you’re not aware of Spotify Wrapped, it’s a creative viral marketing strategy by Spotify that allows Spotify listeners to explore a compilation of info about their engagement on the service over the past year and urges them to post it on social media. It is simply one of the highlights of a Spotify user as it may reveal how good (or bad) their music taste is.

On the whole, it shows you who your favorite musicians of the year were, if you had a favorite genre throughout the last year, and which podcasts you spent the most time listening to. It not only provides insights into your particular Spotify usage, but it also allows you to check worldwide patterns to see if your interests align with the majority of the world’s, or if you’ve found your own little niche.

Why Spotify Wrapped count the data only till end of October?

Since 2016, Spotify Wrapped has released its feature on a yearly basis. However, while Spotify Wrapped is often referred to as a yearly data collection, word on the street is that the program only counts data from 1 January to 31 October of each year.

Although it seemed like a quickly spreading online rumor, we had to take active steps to confirm it. Since a community member pointed out that Spotify does not include the data from November and December, it made little to no sense, until Spotify confirmed the fact. They asked Spotify if they might include the November-December statistics in the next year’s wrap to which Spotify replied, “We’ve been keeping an eye on this submission for an extended period of time, and it doesn’t seem this will reach the votes necessary to put it forward for prioritization,”.

Brendan Codey, associate director for Creator Growth and Programs at Spotify, said in Newsweek Interview last year,

“We need to QA the site and we need to finalize assets for Wrapped, all of which takes a while. You throw Thanksgiving into the mix as well and we have even less time.”

He later confirmed that the same rule applies to the “Spotify Wrapped for Artists” add-on service, which, as the name implies, provides creators with data on who is listening to their tunes, how much their popularity has grown over the year, and who their core demographics are.

Now that it’s past October 31st, it appears that your Spotify listening statistics will be irrelevant for the coming Spotify Wrapped 2022 function. And if you were trying to fool the system via listening to more ‘odd’ music, it’s too late now.
