Riot Games Donated $5 Million to help Ukraine crisis

With the Ukraine-Russia conflict still ongoing, many members of the gaming industry have volunteered their time and resources to assist humanitarian efforts in Ukraine. Humble Bundle’s “Stand for Ukraine” package recently concluded its fundraising efforts to assist a number of assistance groups working to aid those impacted by the war, raising nearly $20 million. In addition, well-known streamers such as Asmongold have also raised significant sums for the cause. Riot Games has been one of the first to make a significant donation to the humanitarian effort.

Riot games has a long history of charity campaigns, as the company has promoted annual charitable donations linked to the release of new League of Legends skin lines on a regular basis. The Elderwood Ornn 2020 Charity Skin was available from the end of 2020 through January 2021, raising over $7 million for Riot Games Social Impact Fund, Riot’s charity organization that invests directly in humanitarian organizations around the globe. Riot has now announced that it will contribute more than $5 million to charitable causes assisting the Ukrainian relief effort.

Riot Games announced via its official Twitter account on Wednesday that the recent charity drive had raised a total of $5.4 Million for charity through the sales of League of Legends’ newest set of Bee skins and the game’s most up-to-date Battle Pass. The $5.4 million was to have been distributed among the International Medical Corps, Doctors Without Borders and the International Committee of the Red Cross after sales of the aforementioned goods from March 5th through March 12th.

Riot Games is the most recent of a slew of businesses to show their support for Ukraine’s cause, with many developers launching similar sales drives. Epic Games just announced that it will donate all revenue from Fortnite’s flagship battle royale for two weeks, beginning on March 20th and ending April 3rd, to a charity. While gaming firms like Electronic Arts and Sony have chosen to halt operations in Russia in response to the conflict, other companies, like Valve and Riot Games, have gone for more localized approaches.

Riot Games enjoyed enormous progress in the year 2021, with the League of Legends developer recording success in a variety of areas throughout the year. The long-anticipated League of Legends animated series, Arcane, was well-received by both long-time fans and newcomers alike, with Riot’s third-party “Riot Forge” program seeing its first releases with Ruined King and Hextech Mayhem launching in the last few months. Riot Games will look to repeat its success from last year going forward, with more third-party games supposedly in the works and Arcane’s Season 2 on the way.
