Real Madrid survives off a stunning comeback to knock out Chelsea in the Champions League quarterfinals

After a thrilling quarter-final match against Real Madrid concluded in a 5-4 aggregate victory for the Spanish side, Chelsea’s Champions League defense has come to an end.

Chelsea Falls, as One

Tonight’s match was truly incredible. Chelsea outplayed Real Madrid for most of the game and were only minutes away from making it to the semi-finals. But then Luka Modric made a magical play, Rodrygo scored, and Karim Benzema snatched victory in extra time. Despite Chelsea’s valiant efforts to overcome the damage caused at Stamford Bridge, the game was decided by the head of Benzema in the end.

“We were unlucky. That is why we are disappointed. We got beaten by individual quality and conversion. We made two mistakes, two ball losses. We deserved to go through after this match today. It was not meant to be.” -Thomas Tuchel at Post-Match Conference.

Real Madrid turned the game around at 3-0 down

Karim Benzema’s three goals in the first leg put Real Madrid in command of the tie, and it was his extra-time header in the second that clinched it, but there were several points at which Chelsea threatened to pull off a legendary European comeback.

Following the 3-1 loss at Stamford Bridge last weekend, Thomas Tuchel declared the game all but settled in the first minutes, although goals from Mason Mount, Timo Werner, and Antonio Rudiger saw the defending champions turn things around and leave them with just 15 minutes remaining.

But Substitute Rodrygo scored in 82nd minute, forcing extra time, where Karim Benzema scored the game’s decisive goal, giving Real Madrid a one-goal aggregate victory. That means Real Madrid will move on to the semi-finals, where they will face either Manchester City or Atletico Madrid.

Real Madrid are having a fantastic season. As if their comeback against Paris Saint-Germain in the second half was enough, they’ve now dug in and found a way to overcome the defending champions. The fourteen is yet standing! Chelsea look shell-shocked, eyes glazed, heads bowed, hands on hips. It won’t help them now, but they’ll remember it with pride as a courageous and magnificent defense of their title. And Porto will always be there for them.
