Discover the new Darkness-based element in Destiny 2 – Strand. Learn about its subclasses and abilities in our overview guide. Destiny 2’s Strand is a new element featured in Lightfall that plays a crucial role in the battle against The Witness and Callus’ forces as they threaten humanity in The Last City and Neomuna.

Unlike other elements in the game, Strand is unique and the second Darkness-based element that only Guardians can control. Alongside exciting lore implications, the introduction of Strand also brings new supers and movement options to the game, promising an exciting gameplay experience for Destiny 2 players.

Strand is New Element Addition in Destiny 2 Lightfall

Destiny 2 Strand is the new elemental power in the game, introduced in Lightfall as a manifestation of the Darkness. It’s a form of psychic energy that Guardians can access to create weapons and abilities. Strand marks the second Darkness element in Destiny 2 after Stasis in Beyond Light, with new subclasses for the Titan, Hunter, and Warlock.

While it’s not known if enemies can deal Strand damage or if there will be Strand weapons, all classes can use Strand to move around with a grapple, making PvP combat and PvE exploration more challenging. Bungie will be revealing more about Strand and its subclasses as we approach Lightfall’s release date. Check out the strand gameplay trailer for Lightfall below to catch a glimpse of Strand in action.

To understand Destiny 2 Strand subclass, players need to grasp the core mechanics associated with it.

Destiny 2 Strand: Basics with their Buffs and Debuffs

  1. The Strand subclass in Destiny 2 involves Weaving objects from Strand, which is a form of psychic energy associated with Darkness.
  2. Enemies defeated using Strand, Unravel, creating a bundle of Strand fibers called a Tangle, which can be thrown or shot to explode.
  3. Woven mail is a Strand buff that reduces damage for the Guardian while in a Strand mesh, but this only reduces body damage in PvP.
  4. Strand also includes debuffs, such as Suspend, which temporarily lifts enemies off the ground and disables them.
  5. Unravel is another debuff that causes an attack burst when attacking an enemy that is unraveled, and it also affects nearby enemies.
  6. Finally, Sever is a debuff that reduces the damage output of the enemy it affects.

Destiny 2 Strand: Grapple

The grapple ability is a crucial Strand mechanic that enables players to weave a hook by hitting the grenade button, which lets them grab onto an anchor point anywhere in the environment. This feature creates new possibilities for exciting gameplay experiences, such as executing melees at the end of a grapple. With grapple abilities, players can swing further or higher, solving platforming puzzles in raids and other PvE activities. Additionally, the mechanic also provides opportunities for players to discover Easter eggs hidden in hard-to-reach areas of existing maps.

Destiny 2 Strand: Abilities

While Bungie has been tight-lipped about Strand’s specific abilities, they have disclosed a few things about the new Darkness power. During the Lightfall preview event, Bungie initially named the Warlock subclass Architects, the Titan subclass Tyrants, and the Hunter subclass Threadrunners. However, in mid-January, the official Destiny 2 Lightfall webpage was updated with two new names and updated descriptions.

Warlock Strand Subclass and Abilities

The Warlock subclass for Strand is now known as Broodweavers and allows players to form sentient creatures with the power.

  • Super: The Super ability, Needlestorm, conjures hardened spikes that stick to enemies and environment before detonating and reweaving into threadlings.
  • Melee: The Arcane Needle melee chains up to three deadly projectiles that track targets for high damage.
  • Warlock Strand Aspects
    • The Weaver’s Call Aspect allows players to cast a rift that weaves three Threadling eggs, which hatch into Threadlings upon hitting a surface.
    • The Mindspun Invocation Aspect improves multiple Warlock Strand abilities such as Grapple and Threadling Grenade.
    • The Shackle Grenade Aspect provides a buff after consuming the grenade and creates a suspending detonation on every kill.

Titan Strand Subclass and Abilities

The Titan subclass for Strand is called Berserker, and they have the ability to manifest claws to sever their targets from the Weave.

  • Super: The Berserker’s super ability is called Bladefury, which allows the player to dual-wield fist blades.
    • Light Attack: It is a supercharged version of the Frenzied Blade melee attack that increases the next attack’s speed, topping out at three hits. Connecting with light attacks builds energy for the super’s heavy attack with each hit.
    • Heavy Attack: It is when the Titan hurls a pair of projectiles forward that seek out enemies, suspending and damaging them on impact.
  • Melee: The melee ability is called Frenzied Blade, which causes the Titan to dash forward and slash enemies with Strand arm blades, severing victims. Defaults to three charges so the Titan can chain them together.
  • Titan Strand Aspects
    • The Into the Fray Aspect allows the player to destroy a Tangle to weave Woven Mail onto the Titan and nearby allies. This reduces damage taken and increases melee energy regeneration when wearing Woven Mail.
    • The Drengr’s Lash Aspect allows the player to cast a class ability and blast forward a powerful ripple in reality, suspending enemies caught in the shockwave.

Hunter Strand Subclass and Abilities

The Hunter subclass in Strand is called Threadrunner and allows Hunters to manipulate threads to dart through the air.

  • Super: The Threadrunner’s super, Silkstrike, uses the grapple ability to move freely in third-person view and throw a rope dart to strike down enemies.
    • Light Attack: It can be used on the ground or in the air and can chain attacks seamlessly, with the dart tip hits dealing bonus damage.
    • Heavy Attack: It swings the rope dart in a 360-degree arc, damaging all enemies. The melee attack, Threaded Spike, bounces the rope dart between enemies, damaging and severing them, with the player earning more melee energy for perfectly timed catches.
  • Hunter Strand Aspects
    • The Ensnaring Slam Aspect suspends nearby enemies when the air-move input is pressed.
    • The Widow’s Silk Aspect grants an additional grenade charge. The Hunter’s grapple ability also creates a persistent grapple Tangle when latched, fully refunding grenade energy, allowing for setting up chains of grapple points for quick movement.

Destiny 2 Strand: Grenades

The upcoming Strand subclass in Destiny 2 will feature three new types of grenades.

  1. Grapple: Allows players to swing through the air using a projected hook controlled with the grenade button.
  2. Threadling Grenade: Splits into three projectiles upon impact that become threadlines.
  3. Shackle Grenade: Acts as a ball that entangles enemies, detonating in a suspending blast and sending out smaller secondary balls to suspend nearby enemies.

These new grenades will add more versatility to the game’s combat and provide players with new ways to engage enemies.

Destiny 2 Strand: Fragments

Bungie has announced new Fragments that players can use to enhance their Strand character builds, including Thread of Ascent, Thread of Fury, Thread of Finality, and Thread of Warding.

  1. Thread of Ascent Fragment: Reloads the player’s equipped weapon and grants increased weapon handling and airborne effectiveness when the grenade ability is activated.
  2. Thread of Fury Fragment: Grants melee energy when damaging targets with a Tangle.
  3. Thread of Finality Fragment: Generates Threadlings when executing finishers.
  4. Thread of Warding Fragment: Grants Woven Mail when the player picks up an orb of power.
