Clair Obscur Expedition 33: What Are Lumina and Chroma Catalysts & How to Use Them

Clair Obscur Expedition 33, one of the best turn-based RPGs of the year, is now available on Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC. As you travel through its beautiful, art-inspired world, you’ll come across two important items: Colour of Lumina and Chroma Catalyst. Here’s a simple guide to what they do and how you can use them.

What Are Colour of Lumina and Chroma Catalyst?

You won’t be able to use either of these items until you meet a mysterious character called The Curator. He joins your party after you finish the Flying Waters area, which comes after Spring Meadows.

To find him, move across the map, set up camp with the D-pad, and head to the cave on the left side of the cliff. Inside, talk to him and choose the option “Upgrade Expedition Resources.”

Chroma Catalyst: Leveling Up Your Weapons

Chroma Catalysts are used to upgrade your weapons. Weapons start at different levels (like 1 or 3), and these catalysts help raise their stats, making them stronger.

You can find Chroma Catalysts as purple loot on the ground, win them in battles, or buy them from certain shops in the game.

Colour of Lumina: Boosting Your Lumina Points

Every Colour of Lumina you use adds one Lumina Point (LP) to a character. These points let you activate Lumina Abilities, which are passive effects you get after mastering a Picto (this happens after four battles).

The more LP you have, the more passive bonuses you can unlock—like gaining extra action points when dodging attacks. You also gain one LP every time a character levels up.

Where to Find Them

Both items are hidden all over the map. You’ll need to explore side paths, beat enemies, and check glowing spots. Look for purple or white glowing loot on the ground.

Boss fights—like the Chromatic Lancelier in Spring Meadows—often drop these items. Merchants in towns like Gestral Village may also sell a few.

Keep an eye out for ledges or grapple points—your controller will vibrate slightly when you’re near one.

Why These Items Matter

Colour of Lumina and Chroma Catalyst are important for making your characters stronger. They help upgrade weapons, unlock new abilities, and give you an edge in tough battles. Finding and using them wisely will make a big difference in your journey through Clair Obscur Expedition 33.
