After certain games had a strange expiration date recorded, players on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita are having problems accessing their digital purchases, as reported by Kotaku. The issue appears to mostly affect classic games, preventing users from playing Chrono Cross, Chrono Trigger, and Final Fantasy VI.

But here’s the strange thing: the expiration dates are from half a century ago. Twitter user Christopher Foose shared an image of his Chrono Cross download, which shows that the game expired on December 31st, 1969, at 7:20 PM. He says the issue only occurred after redownloading the game and that he’s now unable to play it on PS3 and PS Vita.

The same thing happened to me when I tried to play Chrono Cross on the PS3. A 52-year-old expiration date prevented me from playing it. While Tran claims he was able to play the original game on his PS Vita, he couldn’t locate the listing in the store, suggesting that Sony has removed it. Users on Reddit and Twitter shared the same complaint about Rune Factory Oceans, Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition, Gex: Enter the Gecko and other games.

Some players say they have tried different ways to fix the problem, like factory resetting their consoles or subscribing and unsubscribing to PlayStation Plus. But so far, nothing has worked. PlayStation has not said anything about the problem, and the game company did not respond.

However, there is one potential cause for this. According to Kotaku, a bug may be to blame, causing the PS Vita and PS3 to reset the game licenses’ expiration dates back to the Unix epoch, or developers’ arbitrary time and date chosen at which to begin a console’s existence.

Even if this is an isolated incident, it’s causing concerns that Sony is striking yet another blow to the PS3 and PS Vita stores. Last year, after the game firm nearly shut down both platforms, it removed the option to make purchases by using credit cards or PayPal.
